Ari Travis is one such individual who found himself at a crossroads at a young age. Struggling with homelessness and substance abuse, Travis hit rock bottom before discovering ESuarve. Today, at 19, he works in a hospital psych ward, having turned his life around through the support and training he received.

ESuarve, since its inception in 2020, has been instrumental in reshaping the lives of over 350 young people. The organization primarily works with males averaging 17 years of age, many of whom are referred by police or social workers. The unique blend of construction skills training and emotional support creates an environment where these young individuals can thrive.

A Vision Rooted in Personal Experience

The founder of ESuarve, Joseph Te Puni-Fromont, knows firsthand the challenges faced by at-risk youth. Growing up in New Zealand amidst gangs and substance abuse, Te Puni-Fromont's own life was fraught with difficulties. However, a pivotal retreat experience in his late 20s gave him the tools to manage his emotions and inspired him to help others.

Te Puni-Fromont's vision for ESuarve was clear: to create a supportive community where young people could learn to manage their emotions, gain practical skills, and build confidence. The organization's retreats, held in Gold Coast's suburb of Pimpama, offer a structured environment for participants to cultivate new habits and break free from negative patterns.

Building Skills and Confidence

Participants at ESuarve engage in a comprehensive 10-week program where they learn to build tiny houses, earning a nationally recognized construction certificate. Beyond construction skills, they also acquire essential life skills such as budgeting, cooking, and job interview techniques.

The program emphasizes the importance of structure and routine. Participants face real-world consequences for their actions, fostering a sense of responsibility and accountability. Emotional regulation is another key focus, with activities such as ice baths, saunas, and "primal screaming" sessions helping participants manage stress and frustration.

Leveraging Technology for Growth

As ESuarve's impact continues to grow, so does the administrative burden. Initially reliant on manual processes, the nonprofit partnered with technology services company ONGC to streamline operations using Microsoft Power Apps and Microsoft Power Automate. This digital transformation has allowed for more efficient management of participant data, from sign-up to job placement.

The integration of Microsoft technology has also facilitated better reporting and data protection, essential for maintaining trust and meeting compliance requirements. With tools like Microsoft Copilot, the team can now easily summarize documents and refine communications, freeing up more time to focus on their mission.

A Community of Support and Growth

The success of ESuarve is not just in the skills and certifications it provides but in the community it creates. Participants often refer to trainers as "Uncle" and "Aunt," highlighting the familial atmosphere that is central to the organization's ethos. This sense of belonging is crucial for young people who have often felt misunderstood or isolated.

Ari Travis, now a peer worker in a psychiatric ward, exemplifies the lasting impact of ESuarve's approach. From learning practical skills to gaining a voice in the Queensland Youth Parliament, Travis's journey underscores the transformative power of community and support.

With a growing reputation and national recognition, including a National Gold Award at the Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards, ESuarve is poised to continue its mission of empowering at-risk youth.
